Easy Peasy Fingerless Mitts

Posted by Jen on Tuesday Mar 1, 2011 Under Free Patterns

What a wonderful project to start of the new year of knitting! Very simple for the beginner and a super quick knit for all you more experienced knitters at just around 2 hours per mitt. I really love these and will be making several more for gifts throughout the year. I hope you will join me in doing the same. Don’t forget to post all your pictures Ravelry lovers :)

Materials:
DK weight
200 yds
Size 6 DPN needles

Pattern:
Cast on 32 stitches (knit on cast on)
Row 1:  K2 p2 across the 1 DPN
Divide onto 3 dpn’s

Join and begin knitting in the round
Round 2: k2, p2
Round 3: k2, p2, (K2 tog, don’t take off, knit first stitch, take both sts off together), p2
Round 4: k2, p2

Cable Pattern:
Row 1:  K2 p2 across the 1 DPN
Round 2: k2, p2
Round 3: k2, p2, (K2 tog, don’t take off, knit first stitch, take both sts off together), p2
Round 4: k2, p2

Knit cable pattern for 5.5 inches (or to desired length)
On round 4, bind off for the thumb hole as follows:

P 2 tog, place the stitch just purled back on left needle
Purl that stitch and the next one together, and place the one stitch back on the left needle
Repeat this till 6 stitches are bound off.
Knit in pattern to end of round
Using the cast on method you choose, cast on 6 sts and join with beginning of the round

Continue in cable pattern for 5 more repeats (20 total rows)
Bind off loosely.

Thumb:
Pick up and knit 16 sts around the bind off and cast on sts of the thumb hole.
Knit 6 rounds even, bind off.

Weave in ends and enjoy.

Many thanks for this smashing pattern. I have been searching the website for a while and these are just what I was looking for; smart and I am sure they are going to do the job. Thanks.

I just cast these on tonight and I’m trying to work through the cable instructions. I’m a bit confused about the part starting at “Join in the round…” through the cable pattern. If I understand this correctly, you’ve written the cable pattern twice? And is the actual cable pattern three rows: k2 p2, k2 p2 (k2 tog, don’t take off, knit first stitch, take both sts off together) p2, k2 p2 so that there are two rows of k2 p2 back to back?

My name on ravelry is mtualumnus so you can answer me there too.

These look great and I can’t wait to get them finished!

I love this pattern!! I’m a newbie knitter and I am lost a little as I read thru… “Round 3: k2, p2, (K2 tog, don’t take off, knit first stitch, take both sts off together), p2″ I know how to do all of these stitches, but I get lost afterthe k2 tog.. Help! I really want to make these!

These are really cute but I am confused by this…

    Cable Pattern:
    Row 1: K2 p2 across the 1 DPN

Is it just a k2p2 in the round? Please let me know.

Sorry, if it is a dumb question, I have never seen this before.

    Thanks!

I tried doing a row and then reversing and also just continuing the round. I cannot get the cables. Please help!
